The name Halstead is believed that comes from the Old English hald and stede and there are three versions about the meaning which are 'healthy farm' 'safe place' or 'place of refuge'. The first thing that you can mention on the High Street of the town is the church from the 14th century of St Andrew which was significantly renovated during the Victorian period. The church has decoration from the 14th century and earlier such as tomb monument that still retains. The library in Halstead is situated in a large building that was once built as the Corn Exchange in the 1860s and also housed a technical school in the past. The town mainly developed on the hill to the north of the river and nowadays it has a population of approximately 11000 inhabitants.
