Wickford is a comparatively small town with a main High Street including many different shops. The town has existed since the years before 975 AD and the area around it was inhabited in ancient times most likely by a tribe of Britons called Trinovantes. The name of the town is believed to derive from Old Saxon meaning 'place where sheep cross'. Wickford was mainly agricultural village before the 20th century and later changed with other industries involved in the local economy. In the late 1950s and early 1960s the town suffered several floods that caused significant damages to the town. A Wickford masterplan for redevelopments was revealed in 2004 with a budget of 125 million British pounds. Most of the works are being in progress and the town is getting a better look and place for living.
